Both Prague hockey teams continue to do well in the Czech elite league
In ice hockey action Sparta Prague moved into the third place in the Czech elite league by beating Havirov 3-2 on Saturday. Havirov remain the worst team by far in the Czech hockey league, they have won only one game out of 30 so far this season. Sparta has been making a comeback since a slow start to the season, at one point the team was in 8th place. 2nd place Slavia also continued their attempt to catch up to league leaders Pardubice with a 4-1 victory over Zlin. However, Pardubice remain on top with a 15 point lead. On Tuesday the so called 'Prague derby' takes place which will see both 2nd and 3rd place Prague teams in action against one another. In NHL news, Jiri Dopita finally scored his first goal of the season as an Edmonton Oilier, the team shutout the Atlanta Thrashers 3-0 on Sunday night.
Sparta Prague lose another striker
Football now, and Sparta Prague striker Miroslav Baranek will likely miss the rest of the season after breaking his leg in a car accident on Sunday. Baranek is expected to be out for at least five months, meaning he will not return when the league resumes action after the winter break in February. This marks the second time this season that Sparta has lost a striker, fellow forward Libor Sionko is currently out of the line-up with a knee injury.
In other football news, the new coach of the Russian football team FC
Zenit, Vlastimil Petrzela, has added two Czech players to the team. The Czech coach signed the two Sparta Prague players, Martin Horak and Radek Sirl, for two year contracts. Both players have played for the Czech Republic's under 21 team. The move comes days after Sparta Prague's new coach, Jiri Kotrba, stated that he wants to reduce the amount of players on his team.
Czechs qualify for second round of Women's European Handball
Championships The Czech Republic have moved into second place in the Women's European Handball championships. In weekend action the Czechs beat Belarus but lost to defending champions Hungary 26 to 33. Now moving to basketball, Jiri Zidek led the Czech Republic to victory with 23 points over England in the European Basketball championships. The Czech Republic avenged a previous home defeat to England with a 74-68 win in Birmingham. The Czech team entered the 4th quarter down by three points but came back to win the game. The Czech Republic must now win their remaining two matches in order to qualify for the next round.
Dominik Hasek to become a rally racer??
Czech hockey legend Dominik Hasek tried his hand at rally racing at the Prague rally sprint over the weekend. The Stanley Cup and Olympic Gold medal winner navigated to 10th place, this despite the fact that his car sustained considerable damage.
