Seznam.cz: Birth rate in Czechia hits all-time low

There are indications that the birth rate in Czechia has fallen to an all-time low, the news site Seznam.cz says citing preliminary data. In the first three quarters of 2024, only just over 64.000 children were born in Czechia, and if the trend continued into the fourth quarter the overall number of children born last year would not exceed 85,000, which would be the lowest birth rate in history.  The news site says the sharp decline may be due to economic insecurity, expensive housing, as well as broken relationships in the pandemic years. Full statistics for 2024 will be published in a few days’ time.
