Fires increase in Czechia, but fatalities decline

Czech firefighters recorded 17,408 fires in the first nine months of 2026, an increase of 2,187 compared to the same period last year. However, the number of fatalities fell by 11 to 76, according to figures released by the Fire Rescue Service. The increase was mainly driven by fires in natural environments and waste fires. Injuries and evacuations also increased, while damage caused by fires rose by 50 percent to more than five billion crowns. Firefighters also responded to nearly 19,000 road accidents and more incidents involving hazardous substances. Overall, the number of incidents requiring their intervention rose by over ten percent.
