Government nods to proposal to enshrine Czech crown in Constitution
The government has nodded to a proposal to enshrine the Czech crown as the country’s currency in the Constitution, Czech Television reported on Monday.
The proposal was submitted by a group of coalition politicians from Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) and the Motorists’ party. Representatives of ANO, the leading party in the ruling coalition, are notably absent from the list of signatories.
As the proposal involves a constitutional amendment, it would require support from 120 MPs to pass, that is 12 more than the ruling coalition has in the lower house. Its sponsors hope to secure support mainly from the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), although its leader, Martin Kupka, has rejected the proposal.
Upon joining the European Union, Czechia committed to taking steps towards adopting the common European currency.
