Pirates seek Okamura’s removal as speaker of Czech lower house

The opposition Pirate Party plans to propose the removal of Tomio Okamura (Freedom and Direct Democracy) as speaker of the Chamber of Deputies at its next session. Party leader Zdeněk Hřib announced the move on social media platform X on Saturday.

The Pirates accuse Okamura of unprecedented interference with civil society by restricting public access to parliamentary proceedings during Friday’s and Saturday’s debates on a bill to abolish licence fees for Czech Television and Czech Radio.

The proposal is expected to receive support from TOP 09.
