Letter-writing campaign marks Václav Havel’s 90th anniversary
People in Prague have marked what would have been Václav Havel’s 90th birthday by writing letters in support of people unjustly imprisoned around the world. Amnesty International linked the commemoration of the former dissident and first Czech president with its annual Write for Rights campaign. Organisers recalled that Havel himself spent nearly five years in prison and received international support through letters calling for his release. This year’s campaign highlights six prisoners of conscience, including a Ukrainian teacher who refused to follow the curriculum imposed by Russian occupation authorities and a pro-democracy activist from Hong Kong.
