Police investigating contamination at former military site
Police have received a criminal complaint concerning the contaminated site in the Šumava National Park and are investigating it on suspicion of negligent endangerment of public health.
The Czech Army started surveying the site on Wednesday and representatives of the army, Šumava National Park administration, park firefighters and the defence and environment ministries are discussing how to coordinate the clean-up of the contaminated site.
Environment Minister Igor Červený (Motorists) announced last week that around 1,000 tons of contaminated soil and 200 barrels containing hazardous chemicals had been found at the former Dobrá Voda military training area in the Klatovy region.
A CZK 192-million clean-up operation is due to begin next Monday and is expected to continue until June 2028.
The area is under continuous police surveillance.
