Army to start survey of contaminated site in Šumava

The Czech Army will begin surveying a contaminated site near Zhůří in the Šumava National Park on Wednesday. It will then decide how to proceed, Army Chief of Staff Miroslav Hlaváč told Czech Television.

Environment Minister Igor Červený said last week that the site contains around 1,000 tonnes of contaminated soil and 200 barrels of dangerous chemicals. It is located in a former military area near Dobrá Voda.

The government had planned to award the clean-up contract to the company Dekonta, which had already surveyed the site. However, it put the decision on hold last week after some government members objected.
