Supreme Court upholds suspended sentences in dog abuse case

The Czech Supreme Court has rejected a complaint filed by Justice Minister Jeroným Tejc (ANO) challenging the sentences handed to two men convicted of abusing a dog in the Sokolov area.

The men took a sick female dog into a forest, struck it with a spade and buried it while it was still alive. Tejc had challenged the decision to give the men suspended sentences.

The Supreme Court said the sentences fell within the statutory range and that the case did not constitute an exceptional situation warranting intervention by the country's highest court. It stressed that this did not in any way diminish the seriousness of the offence.
