Petřín funicular to resume service after two-year reconstruction

The funicular railway to Prague’s Petřín Hill will resume passenger service on Tuesday, September 22, after a two-year reconstruction, the Prague public transport company announced on Thursday, adding that the service will initially operate on a trial basis.

The funicular is a popular tourist attraction, offering views of the city and access to Petřín’s lookout tower, mirror maze and Štefánik Observatory. It is part of Prague’s public transport network and first began operating in 1891 for the Jubilee Provincial Exhibition.

The new cars were built for CZK 137.7 million by Austrian-Swiss group Doppelmayr/Garaventa, based on a design by Czech studio Anna Marešová Designers. They offer better views of the city and can carry up to 120 passengers, compared with 100 in the previous cars.
