FM Macinka downplays report on Hungary’s alleged briefings to Russia

Foreign Minister Petr Macinka (Motorists) dismissed a report by The Washington Post alleging that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto regularly informed Russia about EU negotiations. He suggested the article was politically motivated ahead of Hungary’s upcoming elections and said he does not consider the paper a highly reliable source. Opposition politicians in Czechia, however, described the alleged behaviour as a serious breach of trust and a threat to EU unity. Szijjarto denied the claims. If confirmed, critics say such actions would undermine cooperation within the European Union and weaken its common stance on security and foreign policy.
