Speed skater Jílek wins Olympic silver, beaten only by record holder Eitrem

Czech speed skater Metoděj Jílek claimed silver in the 5,000 metres at his Olympic debut in Milan, securing the Czech team’s second medal of the Games. The 19-year-old, who has dominated the long-distance events on the World Cup circuit this season, was beaten only by Norway’s world record holder and world champion Sander Eitrem. Bronze went to Italy’s Riccardo Lorello. Jílek follows in the footsteps of seven-time Olympic medallist Martina Sáblíková. He will also target medals in the 10,000 metres and the mass start.
