Zuzana Maděrová crowns steady rise with Olympic snowboarding gold

The Liberec native has spent the past few seasons edging closer to the very top of women’s parallel snowboarding. Strong World Cup performances were interrupted by injury, but resilience and patience proved decisive. Her Olympic triumph now confirms her place among the elite of the discipline.

At just 22, Zuzana Maděrová has written herself into Czech sporting history. In Livigno, she captured Olympic gold in the parallel giant slalom, following in the tracks of Ester Ledecká and delivering the first medal for the Czech team at the Milan–Cortina Games.

Maděrová’s rise has been anything but straightforward. A native of Liberec, she stuck with snowboarding despite her parents’ initial reluctance to see her pursue elite sport. “My family still laughs about it,” she recalled years ago. “Apparently, when I was 14, I said it would be the last Olympics without me – and in the end, it came true.”

She made her Olympic debut in Beijing in 2022 after benefiting from a late reallocation of quota places by the International Ski Federation and a withdrawal by Canada. The experience was harsh: she finished 23rd in qualifying, almost 11 seconds behind Ledecká. But the lesson proved formative.

On the World Cup circuit, Maděrová gradually established herself among the elite, recording multiple podium finishes, including second places in slalom and giant slalom. Her breakthrough 2023/24 season, in which she finished eighth overall in the parallel disciplines, was curtailed by a hip injury. “I managed to finish the season, but nowhere near how I wanted,” she said after an MRI revealed damaged cartilage.

Fully fit again, she entered the current season in strong form, repeatedly reaching the semi-finals early on and narrowly missing victory in Davos in December. Despite a brief illness setback, she returned to the podium in January. The Olympic gold medal was the culmination of that steady ascent – and confirmation that her teenage prophecy was no coincidence.
