Zdráhalová wins European title in 1,000 metres
Czech speed skater Nikola Zdráhalová has won the European title in the 1,000 metres at the championships in Poland. The 29-year-old followed up Saturday’s silver medal in the 1,500 metres to claim the biggest success of her career. Zdráhalová clocked the fastest time in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, beating Dutch skater Chloé Hoogendoorn by 0.28 seconds, with another Dutch racer, Isabel Grevelt, finishing third. Coached by Petr Novák, Zdráhalová made full use of a weaker field, as many top skaters skipped the continental event to focus on World Cup finals and preparations for the Milan Winter Olympics.
