Plaque with names of victims of Charles University shooting unveiled in Prague

A plaque engraved with the names of the victims was unveiled on Sunday at the memorial to those killed in the December 2023 shooting at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts in Prague. The ceremony was organized by the group Spojeni nadějí (United by Hope), the faculty, the university, and bereaved families. It included a moment of silence and a musical tribute on the steps of the Rudolfinum.

The December 21, 2023, attack claimed 14 lives, making it the deadliest shooting in Czech history. The 24-year-old gunman, himself a student, had earlier killed a man and a two-month-old baby in Klánovice forest, and on the day of the shooting also murdered his father, before taking his own life.

The victims are already honored by a three-meter-high wooden sculpture across from the faculty, unveiled in June 2024. The new plaque and planned landscaping will turn the site into a more dignified space for remembrance.
