Czech Radio: More than 500 inmates may be released as non-payment of child support decriminalized

Over 500 people serving prison sentences in Czechia for failing to pay child support could be released early under a new amendment to the Criminal Code, Czech Radio reported. From January 2026, neglecting child support will no longer be a criminal offense, unless it placed children in danger of destitution. Courts will review cases and adjust sentences accordingly. The reform, signed by President Petr Pavel in July, also eases penalties for cannabis cultivation and possession, expands the use of fines, and emphasizes alternative punishments to reduce prison numbers and recidivism. Currently, Czech prisons hold over 17,500 inmates.
