Czech firefighters help battle large wildfire near Athens as winds hamper efforts
Czech firefighters are assisting Greek emergency services in fighting a major wildfire near the town of Keratea, southeast of Athens. Strong winds have made the situation worse, spreading the flames into residential areas and complicating containment efforts. One elderly man was found dead in the affected zone. Czech fire commander Richard Franz confirmed that all 22 Czech personnel are actively deployed, helping to protect homes from advancing flames. The team, stationed in Greece as part of the EU’s Prepositioning program, expects a difficult night ahead, as aerial firefighting is not possible after dark.
