Karel Fiala, musical star and ‘Lemonade Joe’, was born 100 years ago

'Lemonade Joe, or the Horse Opera'

For this week's Sunday Music Show, we’re celebrating the life and music of Karel Fiala, the charismatic Czech singer and actor, who was born on August 3rd 1925. His legacy is forever tied to one of the most popular films in Czech cinema: the unconventional Western ‘Lemonade Joe or The Horse Opera’ (Limonádový Joe aneb Koňská opera).

The film Lemonade Joe, from 1964, is a parody of Western movies that blends grotesque humour, moral satire, and numerous catchy tunes. Karel Fiala played an honest gunslinger who promotes the soft drink Kolaloka instead of liquor, fights crime with nobility, and would never kiss a woman without her father's permission.

Although the lead vocals were recorded by Karel Gott (who was just beginning his musical career at the time), Fiala’s performance was so magnetic it evoked a blend of Cary Grant and Buster Keaton. With elegant movements, striking gestures, and perfect timing, he turned Joe into a cult figure. The film became a national treasure.

Before gaining popularity on the silver screen, Fiala shone as an opera tenor. He performed in productions such as The Merry Widow, My Fair Lady, and Rose-Marie, becoming a fixture at Prague’s Karlín Musical Theatre. The role of Lemonade Joe brought him international attention, including a cameo as Don Giovanni in Miloš Forman’s film Amadeus.

Later, he returned to the role of Joe on stage, this time playing the father of Kolaloka, a soft-drink tycoon. The circle was complete, and audiences were thrilled.

Awards and legacy

Karel Fiala received the Thalia Award for lifetime achievement in musicals, and the President of the Republic posthumously awarded him the Medal of Merit. He passed away in 2020 at the age of 95, but his charisma, elegance, and comic flair continue to captivate new generations who eagerly rediscover Lemonade Joe as if it had been filmed just yesterday.
