Word of the Week: clo – ‘tariff’

Tariffs are a topical concept at the moment, and the Czech word clo is similar to the German over the border: Zoll. It was from medieval German that Czech took the word clo.

German and English share a lot of words, although German words that start with a Z tend to have a T in their English counterpart. German has zu, zwei, zehn and Zunge, while English has to, two, ten and tongue.

With this in mind, we can identify the English relative of Zoll and clo: toll.
