Registration for kindergartens starts, will run until mid-May

Parents across the Czech Republic are now enrolling their children in kindergartens, with registration open until May 16. All children aged three and older are entitled to a place, but in some regions—especially around Prague and in parts of Eastern Bohemia—capacity is strained. Children with delayed school attendance also occupy spots. Since 2017, preschool education is mandatory for five-year-olds, including those who will be educated at home or in informal groups. Kindergartens prioritize children from local districts, and when oversubscribed, a lottery may decide. Electronic pre-registration is available but does not replace official in-person registration.
