Commemoration held for 80th anniversary of Brno’s liberation

A ceremony at Brno’s Central Cemetery today marked 80 years since the city’s liberation in World War II. Around 100 people, including politicians, military representatives, and members of the public, gathered to lay flowers at memorials for Czech, Romanian, and Soviet soldiers. The event included the Czech national anthem and a salute of honour.

Brno and South Moravia were liberated mainly by the Red Army, with support from Romanian forces. The ceremony included a reading of the names of fallen soldiers and a short service in Romanian, with music performed by a Romanian military band.

The anniversary will be marked by more events across the city. Today, Špilberk Castle hosts a historical programme with a military camp, and the castle will be lit in the colours of the Czech flag. On Sunday, a live battle reenactment with period equipment will take place in the Černovice sandpit.
