Czechs celebrate feast of St. Stephen

Czechs celebrate the second day of Christmas whuch honors St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr. According to legend, Stephen died for his faith in Christ. The day is also associated with carols and traditional customs. In the past, people would go caroling, and farmers had seeds blessed in churches. St. Stephen's martyrdom is remembered after the birth of Christ, reflecting his sacrifice. While some sources suggest he died on August 3, his remains were reportedly discovered in December. Especially in the 19th century, St. Stephen’s Day was a significant celebration with visits, gift-giving, and festive caroling continuing until January 6.
