Senator Fischer: instability in Syria could lead to unprecedented wave of refugees to Europe

Czech politicians have welcomed the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime, but fear that instability in the country could lead to civil war and an unprecedented wave of refugees heading to Europe. Pavel Fischer, the chairman of the Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said that within such a wave there would undoubtedly be many groups that could pose a serious security risk, including with regard to the spread of terrorism. He said it was important for the situation in Syria to stabilize and for living conditions to improve in order to avert such a scenario. Fisher added that the Czech Republic could potentially assist the process, especially since it is one of the few Western countries to have maintained an embassy in Syria.
