They have been bred in Eastern Bohemia for more than 400 years. The Kladruber is the oldest Czech horse breed and one of the oldest in the world.

To bring this history to life, I spoke with Zuzana Šancová, the dedicated overseer of breeding at the Czech National Stud. Zuzana will share her insights and experiences, giving us an insider's look at the meticulous care and expertise that goes into maintaining this noble tradition.

"I am responnsible for the 'Stud Book' of the Kladruber horses. It means I have to keep a record of every Kladruber, describe all new foals and I choose the best horses for breeding, both mares and stallions. Together with my coleagues we organize the tests and selections."

The Czech National Stud in Kladruby nad Labem is at the heart of this heritage, known for its majestic Kladruber horses, which have been bred here for over 400 years. Kladruber horses, with their distinctive appearance and noble temperament, are used by the Royal Courts of Denmark and Sweden for ceremonial purposes. This royal connection further underscores the breed's importance and the high regard in which it is held internationally.

What makes the Czech National Stud even more remarkable is its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This prestigious status recognizes the stud's historical and cultural significance, as well as its exceptional contribution to horse breeding.

"It is not just about horse breeding. We have an amazing complex of historical buildings, extraordinary landscape, and people who have been living here for centuries. It is an age old tradition that continues to this day."
