Bell #9801, commemorating World War II, unveiled in Prague

Bell #9801, the name for a symbolic 9,801kg bell that was cast to commemorate the many church bells that were melted down by the Nazis during World War II, was unveiled on Prague’s Smetana embankment on Sunday evening. Members of the organisation Sanctus Castulus, which initiated the project, sounded the bell for the first time on the occasion.

The bell will remain in its current location at least until the end of September. From 2024, it is planned that the bell will be placed on Prague’s Rohan Island.

The bell was cast in Austria by the Grassmayr workshop. The bell’s weight, 9,801 kilograms, is corresponds to the number of bells stolen by the Nazis.
