Leaders appeal for better treatment of minorities at Lety ceremony

A memorial ceremony on Sunday at the site of a WWII concentration camp for Romanies at Lety in South Bohemia was also an appeal to society to treat minorities fairly, Senate speaker Miloš Vystrčil told reporters afterwards. Čeněk Růžička from the Committee for Compensation for the Roma Holocaust said all victims of the Nazism deserved the respect that was shown during the ceremony.

Pirate Party chairman and deputy PM Ivan Bartoš said that Sunday’s event was also important as the situation of minorities was becoming a highly charged issue in the run-up to local elections.

The Museum of Romany Culture said that work to remove a pig farm that now stands on the site of the war-time concentration camp – which was bought out by the government – should begin this summer.
