Almost 46,500 people died in the Czech Republic in the first quarter of 2021, the highest number of deaths seen in one three-month period since the establishment of the state in 1993. The death rate in the period from the start of January until the end of March was 54 percent higher than in the same period the previous year, according to official data released on Monday.
There have been a total of over 30,000 Covid deaths in the Czech Republic, one of the world’s worst per capita rates, and the start of 2021 saw particularly high numbers.
