Antonin Dvorak Pictorial Cancellation

In this week's edition of Mailbox we introduce Radio Prague listener Alexander Dainty from the UK and a Pictorial Cancellation in recognition of the centennial of Antonin Dvorak's death.

Time flies, another week has passed and it's time again for Mailbox - our weekly programme devoted to you, our listeners. And today, we'll be hearing from Mr Alexander Dainty from the UK, who has been tuning in to Radio Prague and visited us recently here at our studios. But before we hear from him, I have a quick announcement to make for those of you who collect stamps and are especially interested in postal cancellations.

We received mail from Spillville, where as many of you probably know, Czech composer Antonin Dvorak spent many years drawing much inspiration for his music. It read:

"The St. Wenceslas Heritage Society, in conjunction with the Spillville-Iowa-Midwest Chapter of the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences is proud to announce the availability of a special United States Postal service Pictorial Cancellation for May 1, 2004 honoring Antonin Dvorak on the centennial of his death."

Those of you interested, please let us know and we'll be happy to send you the postal address - if you have access to the Internet, you'll find it in the transcribed version of this edition of Mailbox. In the United States, it costs 10 dollars; those who need to have it sent abroad will have to add another three dollars.

It's time now to introduce another Radio Prague listener, and David Vaughan spoke to him when he visited us here at our studio:

Well, we've been busy reading through your entries to the Radio Prague annual competition - some of you managed to send them in seconds before the deadline - we actually received an entry at 11pm and 55 seconds on June 15th!

We're almost done, and it won't be too long before we announce who'll be coming to Prague for a week.

But we've also got a monthly quiz and the question for this month is: "There will be nine anniversaries in June. Which of the musicians commemorated was born exactly one hundred years ago?"

Please get your answers to us by June 30th.

Send them to the Radio Prague English Section, 120 99 Prague 2, the Czech Republic or by e-mail to [email protected]
