Klaus "completely healthy", back on holiday at Lany
President Vaclav Klaus has been released from hospital, and is back on holiday with his wife Livia at the presidential chateau in Lany, outside Prague. Mr Klaus was admitted to Prague's General Teaching Hospital on Thursday evening after apparently overexerting himself in the hot weather. He was released on Friday after undergoing tests. The 62-year-old president checked himself into hospital after falling ill following a game of tennis. Mr Klaus had spent last week at a spa in Karlovy Vary, where he was recovering from a recent bout of tonsillitis. A spokesman for the president said tests had shown Mr Klaus was completely healthy.
CEZ loses power from coal-burning plant in storm
The country's largest power producer CEZ said on Friday it had lost all supplies from its largest coal-burning power plant in northwest Bohemia after wind damaged the grid. A spokesman for CEZ said a storm late on Thursday had torn down two pylons and damaged another on the network connecting the firm's Prunerov plant to the national power grid. The spokesman said it would take several weeks to repair the grid and restore supplies, but added that customers had not suffered any disruptions.
Czech computer networks so far free from "blaster worm" virus
A spokeswoman for the Czech division of Microsoft say the country has so far escaped a new computer virus currently attacking systems worldwide. The spokeswoman said the latest Windows worm virus - known as MSBlast or Lovsan - had not so far infected networks in the Czech Republic.
Man in psychiatric hospital after throwing baby son out of window
Police say a man who threw his 11-month-old son out of a first-storey window is being examined at a psychiatric hospital. The baby is recovering in hospital with a broken leg and bruises, after surviving a six-metre fall onto the pavement. The incident occurred on Friday morning in the town of Nejdek, West Bohemia. Witnesses say the baby was thrown out of the window during a row. Police are treating the case as attempted murder.
Heatwave kills 15,000 chickens at East Bohemia battery farm
Reports from East Bohemia say almost 15,000 chickens died at a local battery farm during the recent heatwave. The manager of the Bohemia Chick farm in Choustnikova Hradiste said the chickens died of heat exhaustion. According to some reports, a power cut led to a loss of ventilation at the farm.
Rossi snatches pole for Czech motorcycle Grand Prix
World champion Valentino Rossi fought off a tough challenge from Spain's Sete Gibernau on Saturday to take pole position for Sunday's motorcycle Grand Prix in Brno. The Italian championship leader left it until the last seconds of the qualifying session before registering the quickest time of one minute 58.769 seconds on his Honda.
