Radio Prague re-designs website on Roma issues

Re-design of www.romove.cz

On Monday, Radio Prague introduced its newly designed and expanded website concentrating on Roma issues. At http://www.romove.cz, visitors find up-to-date information on the situation of the Roma minority in the Czech Republic, contacts for Roma organisations, a list of upcoming or ongoing events on Roma issues such as exhibitions, concerts, and seminars, as well as explanations of Roma history, culture, and tradition.... all of this in five languages. I spoke to the head of Radio Prague's Internet department, Jitka Podzimkova to find out more:

"Radio Prague established the Czech Republic's first web pages in 1997 on the occasion of the European Year for the Fight against Racism and as a response to growing levels of migration by the Roma to Western Europe and Canada. The aim of the website was to inform people both internationally and within the Czech Republic itself about the history, culture, traditions and concerns of the Roma minority."

The website has a new look. What can visitors find there?

"The website is in four languages - in Czech, English, German and French. The Czech version contains the most material because it primarily focuses on the Czech Republic. We would like to help break down prejudice against Roma, and also help Roma become more aware of their identity. You'll find information on Roma culture, traditions, history, languages and many articles from Radio Prague about the Roma minority, their common lives and current events."

You just mentioned that one of the main aims is to help the Roma find their identity. How do you do that?

"We are trying to inform the Roma that something like www.romove.cz exists. Czech Radio 1 [Radiozurnal] broadcasts a special programme about the Roma, for the Roma minority, called O Roma Vakeren or The Roma are Speaking. In this programme, our website is mentioned regularly because the programme is available on our website in sound and as a transcribed version. So, I hope that if the Roma are listening to it, they also know our website."
