President Havel marks 57th anniversary of end of WW II in Europe

President Vaclav Havel laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier on Prague's Vitkov hill on Wednesday, at a ceremony marking the 57th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. The chairman of the lower house, Vaclav Klaus, was also in attendance, as was Deputy Prime Minister Pavel Rychetsky.

Prime Minister Zeman opens an exhibition on Czechs at Auschwitz

Meanwhile Prime Minister Milos Zeman opened an exhibition at Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland on the fate of Czech citizens who were sent there. An estimated 42,000 Czechs Jews were killed at the camp, along with around 5,000 Czech Romanies. Fifteen Czech survivors of Auschwitz attended the ceremony on Wednesday.

United States soldier dies in accident in west Bohemia

An American soldier has died in an accident at Hradiste, west Bohemia. Twenty-nine-year old Jeffery Sellars was killed on Tuesday when he was involved in a collision with a fuel tanker. He was one of 2,000 soldiers taking part in a joint Czech-United States exercise which is to run until June 3.

Czech Republic lose in quarter finals at ice hockey World Championships

The Czech Republic's ice hockey team have been knocked out in the quarter-finals of the World Championships in Sweden, losing 3:1 to Russia on Tuesday evening. In a tense game the Czechs did not perform well and could not find a way past a solid Russian defence. The defeat brings to an end a long run of success for the Czech Republic in the competition which they have won the last three years in a row.

UK again screening passengers bound for Britain from Prague airport

British officials are again screening all passengers flying to the United Kingdom from Prague's Ruzyne airport. A spokesperson for the airport authority said the current round of controls had begun last Friday. Britain first launched the controls last June, in an effort to prevent Czech Romanies from applying for asylum in the UK. Some 69 people were refused permission to fly to Britain last month.

Turbine fault leads to Temelin nuclear power plant being shut down again

The controversial Temelin nuclear power plant has been shut down again. Problems were discovered in the turbine in the south Bohemian plant's first reactor during tests on Tuesday, and the plant has been disconnected from the national grid. Temelin has been shut down several times since its launch in late 2000, and there have been calls from neighbouring countries and environmental groups for the plant to be abandoned completely.
