German authorities have recorded 9,400 cases of illegal entry at the border with Czechia and arrested 225 smugglers since the introduction of border checks a year ago. The German Interior Ministry released the figure on Tuesday, as the country marks one year since border controls were reintroduced with Czechia, Poland, and Switzerland.

The controls, initially set up to curb illegal migration and smuggling, were introduced as part of a broader security initiative. Although Germany is part of the passport-free Schengen Zone, it launched border checks with Austria in 2015 during the European migration crisis.

In October 2023, Chancellor Olaf Scholz made it clear that the government intends to maintain these controls for as long as necessary. The current measures, which are set to expire on December 15, 2024, are also likely to be extended.

Workers have reinstalled the 26-tonne clock tower structure on top of the central section of the Industrial Palace at Prague’s Exhibition Grounds. The structure will now be welded to the building, and decorative elements, including the clock, will be reattached.

Part of the restoration is set to be completed by the end of this year, with the remainder expected by 2025, according to Prague City Councillor Adam Zábranský. The total cost is projected to exceed CZK 3 billion.

The clock tower had sustained severe damage in a fire that destroyed part of the palace on October 16, 2008. The restoration of the Industrial Palace began in February 2022 and was initially planned to finish by 2025, but unforeseen complications have delayed completion until 2026.

Marek Novák, a member of the Parliament (ANO opposition Party) and a critic of the proposed Czech cybersecurity law, recently met with Huawei executives during a trip to China. The law, which is being debated in Parliament, could impact Huawei by imposing stricter regulations on technology providers. Novák defended the visit, describing it as a "fact-finding trip" without political engagement. Information about Novák’s visit comes amid warnings from the Czech intelligence service BIS about Chinese influence through official invitations. The BIS advises caution, as China often uses such invitations to create networks of individuals sympathetic to its interests.

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský denied claims that Czechia delayed the issuance of a joint EU statement regarding attacks on the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL). According to a report by DPA, consensus on the text was delayed due to Czech concerns, given its close ties with Israel. However, Lipavský argued the draft was poorly prepared. The EU statement, released Sunday evening, condemned the attacks on UNIFIL and expressed concern over Israeli military actions that injured peacekeepers, calling them violations of international law.

The city of Prague has banned pub crawls, the organized nighttime bar-hopping tours run by specialized agencies. The new regulation, approved by city councilors on Monday, will take effect immediately upon publication. The ban, primarily requested by the local town hall in the center of Prague, aims to address noise disturbances caused by intoxicated tourists. The decision was made after consultations with various stakeholders, including tourism officials and professional guides, who will still be allowed to operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The regulation cites the negative impact of pub crawls on public order, increased noise, and the strain on city services.

Police have initiated criminal proceedings against 13 individuals for suspected bribery involving public contracts at the Prague public transport company (DPP), prosecutor Adam Borgula from the Prague High Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed. This follows a police operation at the DPP on Monday by the National Centre against Organised Crime (NCOZ). DPP is cooperating fully with investigators, though it has not yet been informed of the reasons for the intervention, according to spokesperson Aneta Řehková. Reports suggest the investigation may focus on a contract for metro security awarded around 15 years ago. The case follows a series of DPP-related probes, including the high-profile Dosimeter case, which saw several officials charged with bribery and corruption.
