    People can visit the Liechtenstein Palace on Kampa in Prague on Monday on the occasion of the national holiday; the government uses the palace, among other ways, for representative purposes. At the same time, this will conclude the government office’s series of visitor events held this year in its historical and representative buildings, the office told ČTK. This evening, for the Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy, the office will also illuminate the Straka Academy, where the cabinet meets, in the colors of the Czech tricolor.

    The traditional Concert for Freedom and Democracy performed by the Czech Philharmonic this year offered listeners Resurrection, a symphony by Gustav Mahler, on the eve of the November 17 celebrations. In the sold-out Rudolfinum in Prague, the orchestra was conducted by Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo in the presence of President Petr Pavel.

    Monday, the Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy, is a public holiday. Czechia is marking 36 years since the beginning of the Velvet Revolution, which led to the fall of the Communist regime in former Czechoslovakia. Shops, however, will remain open on Monday. The ban on sales in stores over 200 square meters does not apply to this public holiday. Stores will next be closed only on Christmas Eve in the afternoon.

    ANO movement chairman Andrej Babiš will take irreversible steps to resolve his potential future conflict of interest, but he will not sell Agrofert. He will do so on the day he becomes prime minister, or the day before, depending on his agreement with President Petr Pavel. The movement’s vice-chair Alena Schillerová said this on Sunday on Czech Television’s programme Otázky Václava Moravce.

    The Svobodní party wants to negotiate with its partner movements SPD and PRO about cooperation for the upcoming Senate and municipal elections next year. Their chairman, Libor Vondráček, told journalists this today at the nationwide Svobodní congress in Prague. PRO leader Jindřich Rajchl also called for such cooperation at the congress. SPD leader Tomio Okamura described the current collaboration as excellent and said he is looking forward to continuing it.

    At St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle on Saturday, clergy, believers, and politicians bid farewell to the late Cardinal Dominik Duka. After the mass and funeral service, the coffin with his remains was laid in the cathedral’s archbishop’s tomb to the tolling of bells. Hundreds of people watched. Duka passed away on November 4 at the age of 82.

    Starting in December, an amendment will tighten the rules for the sale and labeling of electronic cigarettes. Manufacturers will have seven months to sell off their stock. After that, it will no longer be possible to sell cigarettes with candy flavors or containing cannabinoids. This was stated to ČTK by Health Ministry spokesman Ondřej Jakob. According to a survey by the National Institute of Public Health (SZÚ), nearly 14 percent of the population used e-cigarettes last year, with the share almost tripling over the past five years. Among young people aged 15 to 24, more than a quarter use them.

    People will commemorate the 36th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution on Monday with a series of events, memorial ceremonies, and concerts in the capital and in the regions. The center of the celebrations will once again be Prague’s Národní třída, where state officials and political party representatives will arrive in the morning and forenoon. As tradition dictates, people will remember not only the fall of the totalitarian regime in 1989, but also the persecution of students during the Nazi occupation in 1939.

    More than 100 mostly young people gathered on Saturday afternoon at the central Masaryk Square in Ostrava for an Antifascist Demonstration for Nature. They protested against the possible appointment of Petr Macinka as Minister of the Environment and the participation of Filip Turek (both from the Motorists party) in the government. The demonstration was organized by the group Bludičky pro přírodu.
