A service at Prague’s Bethlehem Chapel has marked the 611th anniversary of the death of church reformer Jan Hus, who preached there before being burned at the stake in Constance in 1415. Church leaders called for reconciliation in a divided society, peace between nations and support for victims of violence and abuse. Patriarch Tomáš Butta quoted Hus’s words that “harmony is better than victory”, while Ecumenical Council chairman Pavel Pokorný warned against dehumanising opponents in public debate. Hus’s execution inspired the Hussite movement, and July 6 is a national public holiday in Czechia.

People across Czechia are marking the national holiday commemorating the death of religious reformer Jan Hus, who was burned at the stake in the German city of Constance 611 years ago because of his religious teachings. The main commemorative service takes place in the afternoon at Prague’s Bethlehem Chapel, where Hus preached in the early 15th century. It will be led by Patriarch Tomáš Butta of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, together with other church leaders, and will be broadcast live by Czech Television and Czech Radio. Celebrations also continue for a second day in Husinec, Hus’s birthplace in southern Bohemia.

Karolína Muchová advanced to the Wimbledon quarter-finals after defeating fellow Czech and defending champion Barbora Krejčíková 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in a match lasting two hours and 45 minutes. The 10th seed has now reached the last eight at the All England Club for the third time, having also done so in 2019 and 2021. Muchová extended her winning streak to eight matches after arriving in London fresh from her grass-court title in Bad Homburg. She will next face either world number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus or Japan’s Naomi Osaka for a place in the semi-finals.

American actor Harvey Keitel introduced Martin Scorsese’s 1973 crime classic Mean Streets at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where he was warmly welcomed by fans and spoke about the power of culture to shape society. Earlier in the day, Keitel joined festival organisers in presenting the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema to three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson. Richardson praised the festival for inspiring young filmmakers before introducing White Devil, a new documentary by Czech director Jana Hojdová about his life and career. Festival organisers also confirmed that fellow honouree Dustin Hoffman had already left Karlovy Vary after receiving his Crystal Globe on Friday.

A Czech urban search and rescue team has returned home after helping with earthquake response efforts in Venezuela. The 70-member USAR unit searched around 40 damaged buildings and recovered the bodies of five victims, but found no survivors. Rescue operations were complicated by temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius and high humidity, while several firefighters and search dogs suffered minor injuries. The mission marked the first deployment of the Czech Republic’s heavy USAR team to South America. The self-sufficient unit also included military medical staff and a police officer, using drones, seismic detectors, cameras and rescue dogs to search collapsed buildings.

The Czech government delegation led by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) will leave for the NATO summit in Ankara on Tuesday morning, shortly before President Petr Pavel departs on a separate flight. The government confirmed that Babiš is scheduled to attend both the informal dinner on Tuesday and the North Atlantic Council meeting on Wednesday. Pavel’s official programme does not mention either event. The government and the president had been locked in a months-long dispute over his participation. The Constitutional Court ultimately ordered the government to ensure Pavel could attend through a preliminary injunction.

Czech President Petr Pavel says Europe must assume greater responsibility for its own defence while maintaining strong transatlantic ties. In an interview with the Turkish daily Türkiye ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara on July 7–8, he said continued support for Ukraine remains strategically vital for European security. Pavel also called for concrete progress in defence spending, stronger defence industries, and improved capabilities in areas such as air and missile defence and military mobility. He described Turkey as an indispensable NATO ally and said he was looking forward to experiencing the country’s renowned hospitality during the summit.

The Speaker of the Czech Chamber of Deputies, Tomio Okamura (SPD), will visit China in the second half of July. According to a resolution of the Chamber's Organising Committee, he was invited by the chairman of the National People's Congress. Okamura is expected to be accompanied by Renata Vesecká (Motorists), who chairs the Chamber's Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee.
The trip was first reported today by Aktuálně.cz, which said its purpose is to promote economic cooperation and tourism. According to the news outlet, citing a government resolution on scheduled official flights, the delegation will also include business representatives.

Culture Minister Oto Klempíř (Motorists) arrived in Karlovy Vary today, where the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is taking place. The minister did not attend the festival's opening ceremony on Friday.
Klempíř explained his absence from Friday's opening ceremony by saying that the evening should belong to films and the festival's organisers, not to political disputes or conflict. Last week, he addressed participants at the Strážnice International Folklore Festival, where he was met with boos and whistles from some members of the audience.
During the opening ceremony, host Marek Eben noted that this year's event marks the festival's 60th edition. "There are anniversaries to which you have to invite people you hope won't come," he remarked, a comment that some attendees interpreted as a reference to Klempíř's absence.
Klempíř has also recently faced criticism over proposed legislation to change the funding system for Czech public-service media.

Questions about foreign-correspondent experience as well as the present and future of news reporting at Czech Television accompanied today's discussion with moderator and deputy editor-in-chief of news at Czech Television, Martin Řezníček as part of the accompanying program of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
The public debate was the first event of the ČT24 zblízka project at the Czech Television House in Karlovy Vary's Theatre Square.
Řezníček spoke about the importance of public-service media, especially Czech Television and Czech Radio, and about concerns over their weakening.
In mid-June, the government approved a bill on the financing of Czech Television and Czech Radio that abolishes the existing television and radio licence-fee system and transfers the financing of both institutions to the state budget. The proposal would provide both media outlets with roughly 15 percent less funding than they have been operating with since last year's increase in licence fees.
