Film screenings showcasing highlights from this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival begin in Prague and Brno on Monday. The traditional Šary Vary programme runs until July 19, offering selected films from the festival’s 60th edition. Screenings will take place at Prague’s Aero, Světozor and Přítomnost cinemas and at an open-air venue in Brno. The programme includes Czech competition films Pramen and Chica Checa, as well as award-winning international titles. This year’s Karlovy Vary festival screened more than 130 feature films and documentaries, including 37 titles in its competitive and special sections.

Linda Nosková has won her first Grand Slam title after beating fellow Czech Karolína Muchová 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in the first all-Czech major final in history. The 21-year-old ninth seed secured victory after two hours and 27 minutes, despite missing five match points in the second set. Nosková recovered to break Muchová early in the deciding set and converted her sixth match point. She becomes the third Czech Wimbledon champion in four editions, following Markéta Vondroušová and Barbora Krejčíková, and will rise to a career-high world number seven.

Four tonnes of blueberries were used to prepare food and drinks at this year's Blueberry Festival in Borovany, South Bohemia. Around 13,000 visitors attended the 20th edition of the event, where a school canteen prepared 10,000 yeast dumplings with traditional blueberry sauce known as žahour. Visitors could also try blueberry beer, wine and other specialities. New records were set in the blueberry dumpling eating contest: Nelly Brožková ate 26 dumplings, while men's winner Josef Voharčík consumed 30. Historical records show blueberries from Borovany were already being exported to Vienna in 1916.

Two Czech designers are building careers in Brussels while combining sustainability with their Czech roots. Fashion designer Veronika Vimpelová has used traditional Czech blueprint fabric in her work and now designs cycling and running clothes for an Antwerp startup. She also previously worked on costumes for the sci-fi film Dune. Interior designer Kristýna Semerák creates tailored homes for Belgian and international clients, focusing on locally available materials and how people use their living spaces. Both say artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing their work, offering useful tools but also creating new challenges.
