• Ministers say it is time to discuss resubmitting the 2026 budget

    Following the election of Tomio Okamura of the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party as speaker of the lower house, ministers say it is time for the government to decide whether to resubmit the draft 2026 state budget. Transport Minister Martin Kupka of Civic Democrats (ODS) and Agriculture Minister Marek Výborný (Christian Democrats) said the decision must be collective. The previous draft budget with a 286-billion-crown deficit expired with the outgoing parliament. The government is meeting today mainly to discuss its resignation after the ruling coalition lost the October parliamentary elections.

  • Czech industrial output returns to growth in September

    Industrial production in Czechia rose by 0.4 percent year on year in September, returning to growth after a decline in August, according to data published by the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ). Month on month, production increased by 1.1 percent, while the value of new orders was up 4.5 percent. Growth was driven mainly by the metalworking, rubber, and electrical equipment industries, while automobile production declined. New foreign orders rose by 5.6 percent, and domestic ones by 2.7 percent. The number of industrial employees fell by 1.6 percent compared to last year.

  • Roxette to return to Prague with new lead singer

    After a ten-year break, Swedish pop-rock duo Roxette will return to the Czech Republic, performing at Prague’s O2 Arena on Thursday, Czech media report. Following the 2019 death of singer Marie Fredriksson, founding member Per Gessle decided to continue Roxette with a new vocalist, Lena Philipsson, a 59-year-old Swedish singer who represented her country in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest. She will perform Roxette’s biggest hits such as Listen to Your Heart, The Look, and It Must Have Been Love. The Prague show will feature longtime Roxette collaborators including Christoffer Lundquist, Magnus Börjeson, Magnus Eriksson, Dea Norberg, Clarence Öfwerman, and Jonas Isacsson.

  • Czech army surpasses annual recruitment goal

    The Czech army has recruited almost 2,500 new professional soldiers since January, exceeding its 2025 target of 2,100, the Ministry of Defence announced. The army now has over 28,000 professional soldiers and aims to reach 30,000 within five years, along with 10,000 members of active reserves. Chief of the General Staff Karel Řehka and outgoing Defence Minister Jana Černochová of the Civic Democrats (ODS) have repeatedly highlighted personnel shortages in recent years. Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s government has responded by raising both recruitment bonuses and soldiers’ salaries.

  • Czech bituminous coal mining to end in January 2026

    Mining of bituminous coal at the ČSM Mine in Stonava, Karviná region, will end on January 31, 2026 — marking the closure of the last active bituminous coal mine in the Czech Republic. The state-owned company OKD will lay off about 900 employees by the end of February, paying more than half a billion crowns in severance. OKD plans to retain around 600 workers for three years to carry out the technical liquidation of the mine and to develop new business activities, including capturing and using mine gas to produce electricity and heat. The company also plans to buy coal and use its existing facilities to create customized energy mixtures. CEO Roman Sikora said the last wagon of coal would leave the mine after almost 250 years of mining history.

  • Fiala's government to submit resignation on Thursday

    Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s (ODS) government has scheduled a meeting for Thursday at 10:00 a.m. to discuss submitting its resignation, the Office of the Government announced in a press release today. According to the Czech Constitution, the government’s resignation follows the conclusion of the inaugural session of the new Chamber of Deputies. The resignation will then be accepted by President Petr Pavel.

The news was shared on X by Luboš Procházka, director of Olympia Publishing House, which publishes Zeman’s books. Procházka cited information from the former president’s wife, Ivana Zemanová, who said that Zeman is in a stable condition and will remain in the hospital for several more days.

The president also wants to be informed about the steps Babiš, as a potential prime minister, intends to take regarding the conflict-of-interest law.
