Twelve EU member states, led by the Czech Republic, are urging the European Commission to postpone key provisions of the new methane emissions regulation by at least three years. The countries argue that the delay is necessary to safeguard Europe's energy security amid ongoing geopolitical instability. The Czech proposal will be discussed today at a meeting of EU energy ministers in Luxembourg. The Czech Republic is represented by Minister of Industry Karel Havlíček.

The regulation on methane emissions in the energy sector is due to take effect on 1 January 2027. Under the rules, importers of fossil fuels will be required to submit detailed, independently verified annual reports to the relevant national authorities on the methane emissions associated with the energy they supply. According to the Czech Republic, however, compliance will be difficult because of a shortage of qualified verifiers and measurement experts in third countries.

Forward Patrik Schick has unexpectedly ended his international career following the Czech Republic's elimination from the World Cup at the group stage. The 30-year-old, currently the national team's leading scorer, said on Instagram that he had been considering the decision for some time.

Schick made his senior debut for the Czech national team in May 2016. The Bayer Leverkusen striker earned 56 caps and scored 26 goals for his country.

At the ongoing tournament in the United States, Schick failed to find the net. He was also surprisingly left out of the starting lineup for the Czech Republic's final group match, a 3–0 defeat to Mexico.

President Petr Pavel said that as head of state he would lead the Czech delegation to the NATO summit, not just be a member of the team as implied in the government’s statement. Mr. Pavel also told reporters that he himself would decide which events he would participate in during the summit.

The government failed to include President Pavel in the Czech delegation when it approved its composition on Monday, saying he had a different stand on the country’s defense policy than the government, which has executive powers.

In response, the president filed a constitutional competence lawsuit with the Constitutional Court which issued a preliminary injunction ordering the government to ensure Pavel’s participation in the summit while the dispute is being considered.

The opposition Mayors and Independents party (STAN) has called on Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) to dismiss Foreign Minister Petr Macinka (Motorists) over his comments describing recent constitutional developments as a “coup attempt”.

According to STAN, Macinka’s remarks devalue the Constitutional Court’s ruling concerning President Petr Pavel’s participation in the NATO summit in Ankara. STAN said such conduct from a member of the government is unacceptable and should not be tolerated.
