  • Building permits drop sharply as digital delays bite

    New figures show that authorities in Czechia issued just over 45,800 building permits between January and September of this year- nearly ten thousand fewer than in the same period last year, the CTK news agency reported. The slowdown is attributed to a botched digitalisation procedure that has complicated the approval process. Experts warn that this could deepen the shortage of properties on the market and further boost price growth.

  • Outgoing coalition parties request special session of lower house over Babiš’ conflict of interest

    The parties of the outgoing coalition have requested a special session of the lower house over ANO leader and likely future prime minister Andrej Babiš´ conflict of interest.  The head of the Christian Democrats parliamentary group Tom Philipp confirmed that the party had gathered the required 40 signatures and had filed the proposal on Tuesday. At the session, Mr. Babiš will be asked to explain how he intends to resolve the conflict of interest stemming from his ownership of the multi-billion crown conglomerate Agrofert should he be appointed prime minister.

  • Memory of Nation Awards honor resistance fighters from at home and abroad

    Five laureates from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ukraine were honored with the Memory of Nation Award for their courage and integrity in standing up to totalitarian regimes. Among this year’s recipients are 92-year-old Milena Sedláčková who spent two years in a communist prison, Jaroslav Vrbenský, 93, who was jailed for over a decade for aiding persecuted priests and Nadija Kalinčenková, 73, who supports displaced Ukrainians and weaves camouflage nets for the country’s defenders.

  • Czech footballers seal qualifying run with 6-0 win over Gibraltar

    Czech Republic closed out their World Cup qualifying group with a commanding 6–0 victory over Gibraltar. The result left the team just shy of matching their biggest win since the split of Czechoslovakia - the storied 8–1 against Andorra. With second place in the group secured even before kick-off, the Czech side can now look toward March’s play-off with the comfort of knowing they’ll be seeded in the second pot and will host the semi-final. The draw takes place on Thursday.

  • European Commission raises its estimate for Czech economic growth

    According to the European Commission, the Czech economy will grow by 2.4 percent this year, and will then slow to 1.9 percent in 2026. The main driver of growth is expected to be private consumption, resulting from rising real wages and a lower household savings rate. The Commission stated this on Sunday in its autumn economic outlook.

    The European Commission also improved its forecast for EU economic growth for this year and for 2026 to 1.4 percent. In its previous spring forecast, it had estimated this year’s growth at 1.1 percent. It also raised its estimate for economic growth in 2027 by 0.1 percentage point, to 1.5 percent.

  • 102,000 or so commemorate events of 17 November on Národní Street in Prague

    About 102,000 people came on Monday to Národní Street in Prague to commemorate the events of 17 November. This was reported by the organizers of the Korzo Národní event based on data from the mobile operator T-Mobile. The number of participants increased again year-on-year; last year it was roughly 93,000. The Korzo Národní program includes, among other things, discussions and exhibitions. The national anthem was performed by Slovak musician Mário Bihári, and at 17:11 the traditional song A Prayer for Marta was heard, this time performed by actor Jan Cina.

  • Participants of "The Concert for the Future" expressed support for Ukraine and civil society

    At the Concert for the Future in the lower part of Wenceslas Square today, participants expressed support in their speeches for Ukraine, attacked by Russia, as well as for civil society. Singer-songwriter Jaroslav Hutka performed his new songs criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with older pieces such as Havlíčku, Havle and Náměšť. Šimon Pánek, director of the organization People in Need, spoke about the necessity of non-profit organizations, and political geographer Michael Romancov criticized the emerging government of ANO, SPD and Motorists, saying that its policy statement lacks support for Ukraine.

  • Thousands of people gathered for culmination of Brno Seventeenth festival

    Thousands of people arrived for the culmination of today’s Brno Seventeenth festival, which took place mainly on Freedom Square in the afternoon. It rained in Brno all day, and only at dusk did the rain weaken and in some places stop completely. As a result, the square began to fill significantly only shortly before 5 p.m., when a human chain of joined hands formed in Kobližná Street and led all the way to the stage. At the symbolic time of 17:11, A Prayer for Marta was heard, followed by the Czech and Slovak national anthems

  • ‘A Prayer for Marta’ echoed over Národní Street

    The song ‘A Prayer for Marta’ was just heard on the completely packed Národní Street in Prague this evening. One of the symbols of the Velvet Revolution was performed at 17:11 from the balcony of the Metro Palace by actor and singer Jan Cina. In the final bars, onlookers joined in singing. Afterwards, they applauded and rang their keys for a long time, just as people did more than 36 years ago, when key-ringing was one of the characteristic signs of gatherings against the Communist regime.
