The first regular meeting of the government of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) is on the agenda on Tuesday, following its appointment by President Petr Pavel on Monday. The ministers are expected to reject the ETS 2 emissions trading system and the EU migration pact in their resolutions, and they will also approve changes to the building law. They will discuss the mandate for Babiš for the upcoming EU summit. Upon Babiš’s proposal, they may also appoint the Czech ambassador to Vietnam, Hynek Kmoníček, as an advisor for national security.

The situation in which Slovakia's Minister of the Environment, Tomáš Taraba, will represent the Czech Republic at a meeting of EU environment ministers is highly unusual. Sources contacted by ČTK have stated that they do not recall a similar occurrence, even with regard to other countries. Similarly, the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU has not encountered anything like this in the past 20 years. The information regarding Taraba’s representation was shared on Monday by Petr Macinka (Motorists), who is temporarily leading the Ministry of the Environment (MŽP) and was also appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs on the same day. Macinka is temporarily heading the Ministry of the Environment, as the candidate for the position of Minister of the Environment, Filip Turek (Motorists), is dealing with health issues and has yet to meet with President Petr Pavel.

The Motorists’ Party candidate for Minister of the Environment, Filip Turek, should face his controversies like a man and not make excuses like a little boy. President Petr Pavel said this today on Facebook while answering questions from the public. According to him, making fun of everyone may be acceptable for an influencer, but not for someone who wants to be a minister. He emphasized that he has no personal problem with Turek.

Several hundred people, mainly students, protested this afternoon at Hradčanské Square in Prague against the Motorists’ representatives leading the Ministry of the Environment (MŽP). According to them, the Chamber of Deputies should not give confidence to a government in which a representative of this movement will be responsible for nature protection. For the same reasons, the environmental group Greenpeace displayed a large banner on the MŽP building on Monday.

The leadership of the Ministry of Defense was taken over this afternoon by Jaromír Zůna (nominated by SPD), who is also a deputy prime minister in the ANO, SPD and Motorists government. Like the other members of the cabinet, he was formally installed in office by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO); in front of the Ministry of Defencs building he was welcomed by the outgoing minister, Jana Černochová (ODS). Zůna does not plan to make a public statement on Monday.

The first priority of the new Minister of Finance, Alena Schillerová (ANO), at the helm of the ministry will be the draft state budget for next year, which she wants to submit to the government by the second half of January. Among her other goals, she listed combating the shadow economy, tax evasion, and introducing electronic sales reporting (EET) for all categories of merchants from 2027. She also wants to begin talks with the heads of subordinate organizations as soon as possible. Schillerová said this on Monday to journalists after Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) officially installed her in office. According to her, the condition of the Ministry of Finance and its organizational units is unsatisfactory, and she therefore plans to order an internal audit of budgetary processes later on Monday.

“The government of ANO, SPD, and the Motorists will do its utmost to ensure that Czechia prospers and that citizens have a better life,” Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) said after Monday’s first meeting of the newly appointed cabinet. According to him, the cabinet does not need a 100-day grace period, because it spent four years preparing to govern while in opposition and was specific about what it would do. Its evaluation will come in the next elections to the Chamber of Deputies, Babiš said. The ministers will meet again on Tuesday to deal with the regular agenda; according to Babiš, the meeting will be a long one.

The government is aware that Czechia’s membership in the European Union is beneficial. In the past as well, the cabinet that included the ANO movement was constructive and put forward concrete proposals; it was not destructive. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) said this on Monday at a press conference after the cabinet’s first meeting. However, according to him, the EU is losing competitiveness and is failing to address problems related to energy and tax evasion.

Petr Macinka, leader of the Motorists’ party and new foreign minister, has voiced support for relocating the Czech embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Speaking at a gathering in Prague’s Palach Square marking the start of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, he said the embassy should have been moved long ago. The event also recalled a recent deadly attack in Australia, with speakers stressing that terrorism must not be given in to. Macinka said Czechia should express stronger solidarity with Israel and Jewish communities worldwide. Outgoing prime minister Petr Fiala has previously said such a move could be reasonable but must not be rushed, while Senate foreign affairs committee chair Pavel Fischer has warned it lacks backing in international law.
