Czech President Petr Pavel has welcomed the large-scale prisoner swap between Russia and the US in which 24 prisoners were released in total. Mr. Pavel said the agreement was a positive signal that showed that the two countries were still able to communicate.
Among those released from Russian prisons was Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist who lived in the Czech Republic and worked for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Kurmasheva, a mother of two, was detained by the Russian authorities on a visit to her parents last October and sentenced to six-and-a-half years in jail for failing to register as a foreign agent.
In addition, Russian authorities reportedly freed activists and other regime critics such as Vladimir Kara-Murza, Ilya Yashin, and Sasha Skochilenko.

The Temelín Nuclear Power Plant disconnected its second unit on Friday morning for a few days. The turbine's horizontal alignment will be modified to stabilize its vibrations, which recently caused a temporary shutdown. The planned outage, announced in advance, will not affect electricity supply. The plant’s safety is under close scrutiny and its owner the ČEZ Group is investing over 4 billion Czech Crowns in modernization this year.

The Czech Labor and Social Affairs Ministry has distanced itself from Prague Pride, which supports members of LGBT+ minorities, following criticism of the event by the ultra-conservative Alliance for the Family. According to Deník N, the ministry asked for the removal of its logo from the Prague Pride website after the Alliance for the Family publicly questioned its support for the event pointing out that the ministry is led by Christain Democrat Marian Jurečka.
The Alliance for the Family has lobbied against marriage for same-sex couples and has repeatedly spread disinformation about the LGBT+ community, including the view that homosexuality is a disease that should be treated.

Police will tighten security at next week’s Prague Pride festival in the wake of a thwarted plot to kill participants at the Rainbow Pride march in neighbouring Slovakia two weeks ago, Denik N reported. The Interior Ministry is preparing to deploy riot police, anti-conflict teams and patrols with long guns at the more than 200 events held in different parts of the Czech capital in the course of next week. Thousands of people, including many participants from abroad are expected to take part in Prague Pride. The festival will culminate with the traditional rainbow parade in the streets of Prague next Saturday.

Five Czech citizens residing in Lebanon were evacuated from the country on a Hungarian flight to Budapest on Wednesday, the ctk news agency reported. The Czech Foreign Ministry has advised Czech citizens to leave the country without delay amid growing fears of a full-blown war between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah. Those still in the country are being advised to get on the next commercial flight out, for fear that the international airport in Beirut could be closed. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs there are currently 84 Czechs in Lebanon registered in the Drozd travel system. In case of emergency, Czechs residing in Lebanon should contact the Czech Embassy in Beirut at +961 3 332 291.

The 94th Jiráskův Hronov International Amateur Theatre Festival begins Friday in Hronov, Eastern Bohemia. The festival will feature over 100 performances by amateur and professional theater groups, as well as concerts, lectures, workshops, discussions, and exhibitions. The festival flag will be raised, and the first performance will start Friday evening, with the official opening ceremony planned for Saturday. The event is recognized by the International Amateur Theater Association as one of the world's most significant amateur theater festivals.

On Friday, the Prague City Hall will fly the Romani flag to mark the International Romani Holocaust Memorial Day. The date is linked to the tragic night of August 2-3, 1944, when the "Gypsy Family Camp" at Auschwitz-Birkenau was destroyed and thousands of people died in gas chambers. A new exhibition in Hodonín near Kunštát will remember the Romani victims of WWII, focusing on survivors' stories with photos and audio recordings. Most Roma and Sinti in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia were deported to Auschwitz by the Nazi authorites, where nearly all perished.

08/01/2024Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist who lived in the Czech Republic and worked for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty was released from a Russian prison on Wednesday within a large-scale prisoner swap between Russia, the U.S. and several European countries, the International Press Institute reported.
Kurmasheva, a mother of two, was detained by the Russian authorities on a visit to her parents last October and sentenced to six-and-a-half years in jail for failing to register as a foreign agent.
In addition, Russian authorities reportedly freed activists and other regime critics such as Vladimir Kara-Murza, Ilya Yashin, and Sasha Skochilenko. According to the International Press Institute at least 15 political prisoners were set free from Russian prisons within the swap.
