Police have proposed filing charges against Pekárna Zelená louka, a bakery company belonging to the Agrofert group, and two individuals over a European subsidy worth CZK 100 million (€4 million) for an innovative toast bread production line.
The move was confirmed to Czech Radio by prosecutor Adam Bašný of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, which is overseeing the case. The prosecution proposal now awaits formal confirmation. Under Czech criminal procedure rules, there is no deadline for that decision.
Agrofert maintains that the company acted in compliance with the law. The accused face possible prison sentences of between five and ten years if convicted.

The Czech government is determined to tighten the country’s policy on soft drugs. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said after Wednesday's cabinet meeting that the government intends to push through amendments to four laws related to addictive substances, introducing a total of 18 measures to clamp down on drug abuse.
He did not specify which legislation will be amended. However, according to information obtained by the Czech News Agency (ČTK), the proposals include removing kratom from legal sale, tightening regulations on cannabis growers and users, speeding up the process of classifying substances as prohibited or under review, and expanding the powers of municipalities and police.
The package is expected to be discussed by the Government Council for the Coordination of Addiction Policy on 17 June. A document seen by ČTK indicates that kratom could be withdrawn from the market and access to cannabis could once again be restricted.

At a meeting with the heads of Czech Radio and Czech Television on Tuesday representatives of the ruling coalition reiterated their intention to push ahead with a plan to abolish television and radio license fees, and replace them with state funding.
The cabinet will discuss how much funding Czech Television (ČT) and Czech Radio (ČRo) should receive from the state budget next Monday. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, who was present at the talks, said the amount would be fair, predictable and indexed to inflation.
Babiš rejected opposition claims that the change is aimed at influencing public-service media, saying the goal is to end charges for people who do not use the services.
Czech Radio Director-General René Zavoral said after the meeting that there had been no debate on the matter and media representatives were merely informed of the government's plan to abolish the current license-fee law.

Aleš Svoboda is set to become the first Czech astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS), most likely in the second half of 2027. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš announced on Monday.
The mission follows an agreement on the implementation of a Czech orbital mission to the ISS signed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the company Vast.
Speaking at an event at Prague Planetarium on Monday, Babiš said that Svoboda is expected not only to take part in the mission but also to pilot a Dragon spacecraft operated by the US company SpaceX. The spacecraft will be launched into Earth orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.
The role would further enhance the significance of the mission for the Czech Republic, as only around 20 people worldwide have experience piloting a Dragon spacecraft.
Prime Minister Babiš said that Svoboda’s mission represents a major opportunity for Czech scientists, universities and companies to contribute to the development of technologies that could find applications in industry, healthcare and other key sectors.

The Czech state has long been failing to manage public investments effectively, with decision-making fragmented, poorly coordinated and often disconnected from actual needs, financial realities and measurable benefits, according to the conclusion of an audit into state investment policy between 2020 and 2025 by the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ). The report draws on audits focused on transport infrastructure projects.
According to the watchdog, the shortcomings have resulted in wasteful spending, rising project costs and a loss of public trust.
As an example of unnecessary cost increases, the NKÚ pointed to motorway construction. The state paid an average of nearly CZK 275 million per kilometer of motorway opened in 2020. By 2024, the figure had risen to CZK 505 million per kilometer, representing an increase of about 84 percent.
“This enormous increase in costs cannot be attributed solely to high inflation or differing technological complexity of construction projects,” the NKÚ said.

No decision was made on Monday on the composition of the Czech delegation to the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, President Petr Pavel told reporters after leaving Monday’s cabinet session.
According to Mr.Pavel, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) reiterated that the government would decide on the delegation on June 22.
At the same time, the president welcomed the government's approval of his appointment as head of the Czech delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, which will take place in New York in September.
The government and the president have been at odds for months over the makeup of the Czech delegation to the July NATO summit. Pavel insists on taking part and has prepared a constitutional competence lawsuit in case the government excludes him from the delegation.
Babiš has previously argued that the president should not be a member of the delegation, saying that the government should be responsible for defending the Czech Republic’s defence spending commitments at the summit.

A female keeper was injured after being attacked by an adult kangaroo at Plzeň Zoo on Sunday afternoon.
Emergency services transported the woman to hospital following the incident. According to reports, the roughly 80-kilogram animal unexpectedly knocked her to the ground before repeatedly kicking her.
Attacks by kangaroos on humans are rare and typically occur when the animals feel threatened or are defending their territory.
The most recent fatal case was reported last year at a small zoo in the U.S. state of South Carolina, where a kangaroo killed one of the facility’s owners.

Czech meteorologists have confirmed that a tornado occurred near Děčín on Friday, bringing the total number recorded in the country this week to three.
The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) said the other two tornadoes were observed the previous Sunday.
ČHMÚ stressed that weak tornadoes of this kind are a normal part of local weather patterns and should not be compared to the devastating IF4 tornado that struck southern Moravia in 2021.
Images and videos of a funnel cloud above Děčínský Sněžník circulated widely on social media over the weekend before experts verified the phenomenon.
