    A new mobile application (eDoklady) in which people can have their ID cards and, in due time, other documents stored digitally, will be launched in mid-January, the news site Novinky wrote on Friday. However it warned users that the authorities will start accepting digital ID cards with a certain time delay, for example, police officers from the middle of 2024. The plastic cards will remain as an alternative option even after the digital app is accepted across the board.

    Pubs, cafes and restaurants around the country have upped their prices in reaction to the changes in VAT rates on drinks and food. The value added tax on draught beer and soft drinks went from ten to twenty-one percent at the start of 2024 and this was immediately reflected in their prices. In some places, beer has gone up by seven crowns. The price of coffee has also risen significantly. Cafés in the centre of Prague have upped the price of an espresso or cappuccino by ten crowns on average.

    Student volunteers on Friday started collected the candles, flowers, and messages that people placed outside Charles University’s main building Carolinum in Prague in the wake of the tragic shooting at the Faculty of Arts on December 21. According to the dean of the Faculty of Arts, Eva Lehečková, the candles will be used to create a permanent memorial to the victims of the tragedy. The candles, placed outside the faculty's main building on Jan Palach Square, will remain in place for the time being, since the building will remain closed for the rest of the month.

    Ten of the people injured in the shooting at the Prague Faculty of Arts remain in hospital, and one man is still fighting for his life, the news site Novinky reported on Friday. The condition of most of the wounded has gradually improved, and more than half of the injured have been released by doctors for home care. Several of the patients were taken to hospital in critical condition on December 21. One woman suffered seven bullet wounds. The oldest person injured, a 77-year-old woman has been released from hospital. Most of the wounded are people in their 20s, Novinky said.

    The sixth annual national bird census, during which Czechs are encouraged to document, for one hour, all birds that visit feeders near their homes, got underway on Friday.

    The census, which concludes on Sunday, is organized by the Czech Ornithological Society and aims to collect data on the species present during the winter.

    Some 28,000 people took part in last year’s edition of the census, observing over 517,000 birds. The most common type found in the gardens was the Tree Sparrow and House Sparrow, as well as the Great Tit, the Blackbird and the Eurasian Collared Dove.

    Some 60 places in Czechia remain under flood alert on Friday morning, following several days of heavy rain and melting snow.

    The highest of the three flood alert levels was reported on the Vltava River in Český Krumlov, and on four places on the Elbe, including the city of Ústí nad Labem and Děčín.

    Around ten measuring stations reported reaching the second level and some 50 places had the lowest flood warning level.

    A concert by the Czech tenor Petr Nekoranec at the Bohemian National Hall in New York on Thursday evening will open the Year of Czech Music abroad. The concert will feature songs by Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janáček and Bohuslav Martinů. The event, organised by Czech Center New York in partnership with the Dvořák American Heritage Association, will also feature pianist Valeria Polunina.

    The Year of Czech Music, which is held once a decade, on every year that ends on the number four, was first held in 1924, when it celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bedřich Smetana. In 2024 the celebrations will also commemorate other anniversaries, including that of Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janáček, and Josef Suk.

    Ivan Hašek has become the new coach of the Czech national football squad. He was unanimously elected to the post on Thursday by the Czech Football Association‘s executive committee.

    The 60-year-old coach, who briefly led the national team in 2009, replaced Jaroslav Šilhavý. He will sign a contract until the end of the World Cup qualification, which takes place in November next year.

    The Czech Republic’s 2023 state budget ended with a deficit of CZK 288.5 billion, Finance Minister Zbyněk Stanjura said on Thursday. It is the best economic result since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic but also the fourth worst result in the country’s history.

    Meanwhile, Czechia’s state debt rose to a record CZK 3.111 trillion last year, compared to CZK 2.895 trillion in 2022, the Ministry of Finance announced.
