Czech snowboarder Zuzana Maděrová came second in the parallel giant slalom in Simonhöhe, Austria, and reached the World Cup podium for the first time in her career. The 20-year-old Czech was defeated in the final by Austria’s Sabine Schöffmann.
Maděrová's best result in the elite series so far this season was a fourth-place finish in the giant slalom in Cortina d'Ampezzo in December and in the slalom in Pamporovo, Bulgaria, last weekend.

Czech floorball team Tatran Střešovice has won the 2024 Men’s Champions Cup, beating the defending champion IBF Falun of Sweden 6-4 in the final in Prague on Saturday. It is the first time in history that a Czech team has claimed the title.
Captain Marek Beneš contributed a goal and two assists, while Matěj Havlas, another Czech reigning world vice-champion, scored two goals.

The Czech firefighters, who have been helping in the north of France following devastating floods in early January, have returned to Czechia.
A total of 18 professional Czech firefighters from Hlučín in Moravia had been operating in the Pas-de-Calais department since January 5, using specialised equipment, including two large-capacity pumps.
The team returned home on Friday, after the situation in the affected French region had stabilised.

The Czech Veterinary authorities have confirmed the first case of avian influenza among wild birds in Czechia this year. The deadly H5N1 virus, which can be transmitted to humans, was detected in four dead birds in South Bohemia.
Since the beginning of this year, 13 outbreaks of avian influenza have been confirmed in Czechia, all among private breeders. The disease reappeared in the country in early January after an eighth-month absence.

Around three hundred cold water enthusiasts of all ages have taken part in the traditional winter swim in the Vltava River in Prague's district of Braník.
Over 300 swimmers from Czechia and abroad took plunge in the icy river on Saturday as part of the annual Branické ledy competition, which is now in its 21st year. The oldest participant was Andrej Dzuba from Prostějov, who is 82.
The participants could choose between four tracks measuring 250, 500, 750 and 1000 meters, and one 100-metre long fitness track.

Prague city hygiene inspectors imposed over 500 fines on restaurants, pubs and other hospitality facilities last year, in a total amount of CZK 3 million. The number of fines imposed in 2023 was almost 50 percent higher than in the previous year. The number of inspections also increased by almost a thousand.
One in ten inspections was carried out following a report from customers. The increase in the number of inspections is in response to the deteriorating hygiene conditions in catering establishments following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Last year, hygiene officers also dealt with two major cases of food poisoning in hotels catering to foreign guests. In both cases, inspections revealed deficiencies in food handling, preparation and cooking.

Events marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day to honour the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism will be held around Czechia on Saturday.
A candlelight procession will be held in Terezín, in presence of the head of the Terezín Memorial Jan Roubínek and Vice-President of the European Commission Director of the Terezín Memorial, and Věra Jourová,
A public reading of the names of the Holocaust victims will take place at the castle in Mladá Boleslav, where Jews from the surrounding area were interned between 1940 and 1943.
International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust is celebrated on January 27, the day that Red Army troops entered the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp complex in 1945.

The Christian Democrats backed their leader Marian Jurečka to retain the chairmanship and continue his work as Minister of Labour and Social Affairs until the next party congress, which is due to take place in the second half of October.
The decision was taken by the party national committee on Friday evening. Forty-six members of the committee have supported the resolution expressing confidence in Jurečka, while 26 voted against and 12 abstained.
Mr. Jurečka has been facing calls for his resignation within the Christian Democrats over a Christmas party at his Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs hours after a mass shooting in Prague.

The reigning world champion in snowboard cross Eva Adamczykova dominated the first World Cup race in St. Moritz. Although she was third in the qualifiers, she triumphed with ease in the elimination phase coming beating home contestant Sophie Hediger and Chloé Trespeuch from France. Kryštof Choura, who advanced to the final for the first time in his career, finished fourth.
