Czech farmers will join European protests against high energy costs, cheap goods from Ukraine, excessive bureaucracy and the European Union's Green Deal scheduled to take place on March 20, Martin Pýcha, chairman of the Czech Agricultural Union told the Czech Press Agency. Protest rides of tractors and other machinery will reportedly take place across the country and at several border crossings. Pýcha said the concessions made by the government in recent weeks were a move in the right direction, but will not significantly improve the situation of Czech farmers. Agriculture Minister Marek Výborný urged farmers to show consideration for citizens and not to block key transport routes.

On a visit to neighbouring Saxony, President Petr Pavel on Friday met for talks with Saxony’s Minister President Michael Kretschmer to discuss bilateral ties and cross border cooperation.
Mr. Kretschmer said that Pavel's visit on the anniversary of the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939 was an indication of how far the two states had come in developing trust and good relations. President Pavel said there had been good and bad chapters in Czech and German history and he was glad that the burden of the past had been removed. "Today we can safely say that we are friends and that we understand each other," Mr. Pavel added.
The two leaders stressed the importance of continued support for Ukraine in its defence against the Russian invasion and Kretschmer praised the Czech initiative to obtain badly-needed ammunition for Ukraine from outside the EU.

The Prague team have thus been eliminated from the tournament. The Czech title-holders had already lost the first leg 1:5 in Prague last week, so their chances of advancing to the quarter-finals were already considered to be extremely low.

The human rights advocacy group Voice Against Violence has called on MPs in an open letter to continue discussing the Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and to support its ratification. They say that the recent rejection of the convention by the Senate should not be a reason to stop the ratification process. The letter has the support of 50 Czech organizations.
In January, the Senate narrowly failed to approve the Istanbul Convention, thereby making Czechia one of the few European states to sign but not ratify the convention. The lower house was also meant to vote on the document, but given the Senate's position, it is unlikely to discuss it.

Czechia and the Philippines are aligned in their assessments of the international security situation, President Petr Pavel said after meeting with the President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in Prague on Thursday. He added that the Czech Republic is fully on the side of the Philippines when it comes to the country's claim to the free movement of goods and maritime transport in the South China Sea.
Mr. Pavel also noted that Czechia is struggling with a labour shortage and that the Philippines is one of their priority countries for workers to come and fill the gap. In December, the Czech government approved a regulation that will increase the limit for business visa applications from 5,000 to 10,300 in the case of the Philippines from May.
President Marcos said the countries can increase their cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, energy, aviation, defence and cyber security. Czech Agriculture Minister Marek Výborný will soon be visiting the Philippines with a business delegation.
The Philippine president is in Prague to discuss cooperation between the two countries and will open the Czech-Philippine Business Forum with his Czech counterpart on Friday. He also has planned meetings with Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the head of the Senate, Miloš Vystrčil, and the Speaker of the lower house, Markéta Pekarová Adamová.

Some 477 new cases of whooping cough were registered in Czechia between Monday and Wednesday morning, with the total number of cases this year already reaching 2750. This is the highest number of registered cases of the infectious disease in the country in a single calendar year since the 1960s.
However, Deputy Health Minister Josef Pavlovic said that neither whooping cough nor any of the other infectious diseases that have been on the rise in Czechia recently, such as tuberculosis and diphtheria, are close to reaching epidemic levels yet. He also said that the country has sufficient amounts of the necessary medicines and vaccines. According to the director of the Department of Public Health Protection, Matyáš Fošum, the manufacturer of the whooping cough vaccine for children has reported a shortage, but 10,000 doses will be imported from the UK next week.
