Czech Olympic champions Martin Fuksa and Josef Dostál both claimed gold medals at the European Canoe Sprint Championships in Portugal on Saturday. Fuksa won the men’s C1 1,000 metres after edging Russia’s Zakhar Petrov in a dramatic finish, securing his 14th European title and extending his unbeaten run this season. Dostál was initially second in the men’s K1 500 metres but was promoted to first after Poland’s Alex Borucki was disqualified. The victory gave Dostál his fifth European title. Earlier in the day, he finished fourth in the K1 1,000 metres final.

The Civic Democratic Party (ODS), Czechia’s largest opposition party, has unveiled the main priorities of its future programme at a policy conference in Prague. The party called for lower taxes on labour, reforms of healthcare and education, and tighter control of public spending. Other proposals include expanding voluntary health insurance, providing schoolchildren with tablets for classroom use, increasing labour market flexibility and creating a national investment fund for infrastructure projects. The party also reaffirmed its commitment to NATO and the European Union while maintaining its opposition to adopting the euro. The new party programme is expected to be finalised by the end of the year.

Czech billionaire Daniel Křetínský is set to become the largest shareholder in West Ham United after increasing his stake from 27 to 43 percent. His company, 1890s Holdings, is acquiring additional shares from club chair Vanessa Gold, with the transaction expected to be completed within weeks. The ownership change follows allegations of sexual misconduct against co-owner David Sullivan, who has stepped down from his leadership roles at the club while denying the claims. Křetínský and Gold said their priority is to stabilise West Ham, retain key players and secure an immediate return to the Premier League following the club’s relegation.

Hundreds of people gathered in the village of Lidice on Saturday to commemorate the 84th anniversary of one of the worst Nazi atrocities committed in the Czech lands during World War II. Participants, including several surviving Lidice children, laid flowers at the mass grave of the murdered men. Following the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich in 1942, Nazi forces executed 173 Lidice men, deported the women to the Ravensbrück concentration camp and murdered most of the village’s children. In total, 340 Lidice residents lost their lives. Memorial director Eduard Stehlík said the tragedy remains a reminder that peace and freedom can never be taken for granted.

Colonel Jan Husák, head of the Czech Army’s Directorate of Foreign Activities, is set to take up a senior position at NATO’s Joint Support and Enabling Command (JSEC) in Germany. According to Czech Radio, he will serve as deputy chief of staff, helping coordinate the alliance’s logistics and support operations, including the rapid movement of allied forces across member states. His three-year posting is due to begin in August, and the Czech government is expected to approve his promotion to brigadier general on Monday. Husák has served in the Czech military since 1990 and previously held NATO assignments in Germany and Ukraine.

Many Czech employees over the age of 50 struggle to combine work with caring for elderly or disabled relatives, with some leaving the labour market altogether, according to a new analysis by the Centre for Economic and Market Analysis (CETA). Nearly half of workers aged 50 to 64 described balancing employment and caregiving as a major challenge, while around one in four working-age caregivers are no longer employed. The study estimates that long-term unemployment among older workers costs the Czech economy around CZK 61 billion annually through lost wages, lower tax revenues and higher public spending, while many older jobseekers find it difficult to return to work.

The Czech government is due to discuss new regulations on Monday governing state grants for national minority projects and Roma integration programmes. Under the proposal, responsibility for the funding schemes will shift from the Government Office to the ministries of Culture, Labour and Education from July. The changes would also allow state support for digital projects, including online publications, social media content and streaming, aimed at preserving minority languages, culture and traditions. The new regulation is intended to modernise and unify existing grant rules while supporting education, cultural activities, research and initiatives promoting the inclusion of Roma communities.

The 68th edition of the Smetana Litomyšl National Festival opened on Friday with a gala concert by the Czech Philharmonic conducted by American maestro David Robertson. South Korean pianist Cho Seong-jin, one of the festival’s star guests, received a standing ovation and returned for a five-minute encore after performing Beethoven’s “Emperor” Piano Concerto. Running until July 5, the festival will present more than 50 events, including opera, symphonic and chamber music, dance and cross-disciplinary productions. Highlights include the debut of the London Symphony Orchestra, Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, and a rare concert performance of Bohuslav Martinů’s opera Mariken de Nimègue.

The Respect Festival opens on Prague’s Štvanice Island on Saturday, presenting two days of global music from Africa, Asia and beyond. This year’s edition introduces artists from Madagascar and Cape Verde for the first time. Saturday’s programme features Pakistani singer Muslim Shaggan, Kenyan performer Ogoya Nengo, Dutch-Kurdish artist Meral Polat, Cape Verdean musician Mario Lucio and Madagascar’s Bobo & Behaja. Sunday’s line-up includes performers from Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania and other countries, blending traditional and contemporary sounds. Alongside concerts, the family-friendly festival offers children’s activities, workshops and international food. Music runs daily from 1 p.m. until shortly before 10 p.m.
