The 79th Prague Spring international classical music festival comes to a close on Monday evening with a performance at the Smetana Hall of Prague’s Municipal House. The Czech Philharmonic, led by conductor David Robertson, will play music by Czech composers Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janáček and Josef Suk, featuring Czech violinist Josef Špaček.
The programme will also present the European premiere of Superorganisms, a piece by contemporary Czech composer Miroslav Srnka.
Czechia’s largest classical music festival got underway on May 12, offering dozens of concerts.

Eighteen people, including children, suffered injuries after being struck by lightning on Sunday in Vratislavice nad Nisou on the outskirts of Liberec. The incident happened at the town’s castle park. The group of people had been reportedly taking shelter under a tree, when it was struck by a lightning bolt.
According to the spokesman of the Liberec hospital, five people had to be resuscitated following the incident.

The first ever butterfly census involving the public is due to get underway in Czechia on Monday, 3 June. The aim of the event, called Butterfly Half-hour, is to estimate the populations of butterflies in the country and help scientists with protecting the insects, which are rapidly disappearing from nature.
The event is organised by the international nature conservation group JARO, in cooperation with the Czech Entomological Society, the Society for the Protection of Butterflies and the Institute of Entomology of the Czech Academy of Sciences’ Biological Centre.
The public butterfly count will run until June 9. The summer edition of the event is scheduled for mid-July.

Czech tennis player Markéta Vondroušová reached the quarter-finals of the French Open on Friday after beating the Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic 6-4, 6-2. The fifth-seeded Vondroušová will next face World No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
The 24-year-old Czech, who became the first unseeded player to win Wimbledon last year, lost the finals at Roland Garros in 2019.

Some 100 soldiers from the 25th anti-aircraft missile regiment from Strakonice will represent the Czech Army at the international exercise Ramstein Legacy 2024.
Soldiers from 15 NATO member states will take part in the joint training of air defence units, due to take place in Romania and Hungary from between June 3 and 14. The soldiers will practice identifying and intercepting air attack means including drones.

The latest addition to Prague Zoo’s orangutan family was officially named Harapan during a ceremony at Prague Zoo on Sunday. The name was selected from around 2,000 suggestions sent in by the public. The name comes from Indonesian and translates as 'hope'.
Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský, British Ambassador to Prague Matt Field and Deputy Mayor Jana Komrsková participated in the official ceremony, which took place on Harapan’s one-month birthday.
The mother of the orangutan cub is 11-year-old Diri, who was also born in Troja. Prague Zoo has been breeding orangutans almost continuously since 1961.

ANO would come first in Czechia’s elections to the European Parliament with 23.1 percent of the vote, according to the latest poll by the STEM/MARK agency, released on Sunday. The Together alliance of the Civic Democrats, TOP 09 and the Christian Democrats would come second with 21.5 percent.
According to the survey, the Mayors and Freedom and Direct Democracy would win a 10.3 percent voter support. The coalition of Freedom and Direct Democracy and Oath would place fourth with 9.5 percent, closely followed by the Pirate Party with 9.4 percent.
The European elections take place in Czechia on June 7-8.

The flood warning issued by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute on Friday is still in force in several places in the Plzeň. Domažlice and Klatovy regions on Sunday. However, water levels are expected to gradually recede.
Rivers and streams in western Bohemia reached flood levels due to heavy rains on Friday and Saturday, even reaching the highest, third-level degree in several places.
Firefighters responded to over 300 emergencies on Saturday due to heavy rain. They were called mainly to drain water from flooded cellars and remove fallen trees.
