The celebrated Czech-born writer Milan Kundera, author of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, has died in Paris at the age of 94. The information was confirmed by Anna Mrázová, spokeswoman for the Moravian Library in Brno.
The best-known contemporary Czech novelist in the world, Kundera was born in Brno in 1929. His first novel The Joke came out in 1967 and was made into a film the following year.
Following the crushing of the Prague Spring, Kundera was sacked from Prague’s FAMU film school. In 1975, he emigrated to France, where he gained citizenship in 1981.
The library and archive of Milan Kundera was recently transported from Paris to his home city of Brno, where it opened within the spaces of the Moravian Library in April this year on the occasion of his 94th birthday.

This year’s edition of Bohemia JazzFest got underway at the Royal Garden at Prague Castle on Tuesday evening. The opening night of the annual event, organised by Czech musician Rudy Linka, culminated with a set by Portuguese fado legend Camane.
Bohemia JazzFest – now in its 18th edition – continues through the week at different towns and cities, including Plzeň, Hluboká nad Vltavou and Brno. All shows are free of charge.

A Czech government bill to slow the indexation of old-age pensions and tighten the rules for early retirement now stands before its third reading after a vote in the lower house on Tuesday. The vote followed a debate lasting over eight hours and concluded late in the evening.
MPs will vote on the matter for a final time next week at the earliest.
The minister of social affairs, Marian Jurečka, said on Tuesday that the move was necessary to maintain the long-term viability of the pension system. Alena Schillerová of main opposition party ANO said the only aim of the bill was to deprive present and future pensioners of money.

Markéta Vondroušová has reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon for the first time in her career. The Czech, who is 24, overcame American third seed Jessica Pegula 6-4 2-6 6-4 after a major turnaround in the third set at the All-England Club in London. Previously she had not gone beyond the second round.
Vondroušová will now face Elina Svitolina for a place in the final.

The Czech customs service arrested 13 people in May on charges of illegal cigarette production. The detained are accused of causing the state CZK 111 million in lost consumer tax revenues. The arrests followed a coordinated operation including Czech, Polish and Slovak customs offers investigating illegal tobacco products.
The Czech side uncovered 8.5 million fake cigarettes, mainly passing as Marlboro brand, after a tip-off from their Polish colleagues.

Retired Czech ice hockey player Dominik Hašek says European Union states should provide asylum to Russian and Belarusian sports people who condemn Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. He made the comment on Tuesday at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, at a discussion with MEPs on how to prevent Russian athletes promoting the Putin regime.
Hašek – one of Czechia’s greatest ever hockey players – said that if sports people did not clearly condemn Russia’s war on Ukraine they should be barred from participation in international competitions, including next year’s Olympics in Paris.

Czechia will make a major contribution to a NATO plan to boost the alliance’s international battle group in Slovakia, President Petr Pavel told journalists at the start of a NATO summit in Vilnius on Tuesday. Czechia will have one mixed battalion in Slovakia, he said.
Reinforcing international units on NATO’s eastern flank is central to collective defence plans being discussed in Vilnius, with troop numbers in such groups expected to reach up to 5,000.
At the end of last year the Czech-headed unit based in Slovakia’s Lešť had 1,000 soldiers.

The Czech economy will stagnate this year before expanding by 2% next year, according to the latest outlook from the Chamber of Commerce, which was published on Tuesday. The business organisation said that salaries in Czechia could start to rise in real terms in the second half of 2023.
The annual inflation rate will reach 10.8 percent this year before falling to 3.3 percent in 2024, the Chamber of Commerce expects.

Czech football international Patrik Schick is expected to return to training in October, his club Bayer Leverkusen said on Tuesday. The striker, who is 27, underwent a foot operation last month and has already started rehab, the German club said on its website.
Schick’s season was cut short due to injury at the start of March. He has scored 18 goals in 33 games for the Czech national side.
