President Petr Pavel and his wife Eva spent the morning of their second day in the Olomouc Region visiting a primary school and a clothing company named Woox that makes flannel shirts. President Pavel's flannel shirts became iconic during his election campaign and as a result, the company's orders for the clothing item increased sharply, the company's co-owner Petr Vaculík told the Czech News Agency. After President Pavel gifted Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová a Woox flannel shirt, the company's website reportedly crashed.
After visiting Woox, President Pavel also paid a visit to a primary school in Vápenná, after having received a letter of personal invitation from the children after his election in January. The small primary school has never received such a distinguished guest, school director Zdeněk Hořava told the Czech News Agency.
The president is scheduled to have lunch with two local mayors and then visit the Paper mill in Velké Losiny, a historic mill founded in the late 16th century that still manufactures handmade paper to this day. He will end his trip with a debate with members of the Ground Forces Command in Olomouc.

Czech tennis player Markéta Vondroušová was defeated by Poland’s Iga Swiatek in her first match of the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico. The Wimbledon Champion lost 6-7, 0-6 in one hour and 40 minutes.
The 24-year-old Czech will also play against American Cori Gauff and Tunisian Uns Dzhabir in the four-member Chetumal group. The top two will advance to the semi-finals.
In doubles, the Czech pair Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková will make their tournament debut on Tuesday against Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegemund.

The prestigious 2023 Architecture Grand Prix has gone to the mjölk architects studio for the headquarters of Kloboucká lesní forestry company in the Zlín region.
An international jury selected the project from 50 entries in the competition, which is run by the Society of Czech Architects and the Czech Chamber of Architects.
The jury praised the use of natural materials and understated design and highlighted the philanthropic activities of the client.
Zdeňka Vydrová, long-time city architect of Litomyšl and later Tišnov, received a lifetime achievement award at Monday evening’s prize giving ceremony at Prague‘s Trade Fair Palace.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Minister for Industry and Trade Jozef Síkela met with Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blum on Monday to discuss the potential placement of a factory for electric car batteries in Líně near Pilsen. According to the ministry’s spokesman, the results of the talks will be announced after the government’s session on Wednesday.
Czechia, along with Poland and Hungary, is among the locations being considered for the plant which should start producing batteries in 2027. The Czech Prime Minister has recently said that if the decision on the factory’s placement isn’t reached in the near future, the country should focus on other strategic projects.

Four people and one company have been charged with negligent endangerment in connection with the fall of a cable car on Ještěd Mountain near Liberec two years ago, the Czech News Agency reported on Monday.
The fatal accident happened on October 31, 2022, just a day before a scheduled break in service for a safety inspection and routine maintenance work ahead of the winter season.
The cable car fell from a height of 30 meters killing the cabin operator, who was alone, on impact. Czech Railways, which owns the cable car, filed a complaint against the charges.
The cable car has been out of service since the accident, with the cost of renovation estimated at more than a quarter billion crowns.

The 79th Prague Spring International Music Festival, due to take place between May 12 and June 3, will offer 50 concerts, the organizers revealed on Monday. The festival will open at Prague’s Municipal House with Bedřich Smetana’s My Country performed by the Berlin Philharmonic headed by conductor Kirill Petrenko.
The upcoming edition will also celebrate the Year of Czech Music, and the bicentenary of Smetana's birth. Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša, who will be the ambassador of the Czech Year of Music, will lead a concert performance of Smetana's opera Libuše.
Tickets for the Prague Spring will go on sale on 1 November 2023 on the festival’s website.

The organizing team of the 2024 World Ice Hockey Championship, which will take place in Ostrava and Prague next May, is looking for a total of 1,000 volunteers to help coordinate the event. The call, issued on Monday, is open to anyone over the age of 17.
According to the organizers of the World Ice Hockey Championship, the number of tickets sold or booked has already exceeded 50 per cent of its total capacity. At the moment, people can only buy multiple tickets, with tickets for individual matches only going on sale shortly before the start of the event.

The Ostrava Zoo has started breeding a critically endangered species of lemur. The broad-nosed lemur is native to the island of Madagascar and its wild population is estimated at 1,500 individuals.
The animal, which is listed as a critically endangered species on the IUCN Red List, is also rarely bred in captivity. There are only 32 animals kept in eight institutions across Europe.
The Ostrava Zoo, which currently breeds 10 different species of lemurs, is not only involved in international conservation programmes, but also takes part in biodiversity conservation directly in Madagascar.
