Tram makers Škoda Transportation want to hold talks with the authorities in Warsaw, after the Polish city cancelled a lucrative contract won by the Czech firm. Hospodářské noviny reported on Wednesday that the order was for over 200 trams at a value of CZK 16.6 billion. The newspaper said Warsaw had cancelled the tender as it did not have the funds to cover the costs.
The value of the contract exceeds Škoda Transportation’s entire revenues for the whole of 2016. A representative of the firm said it would offer the Warsaw authorities a reduced price to boost the city’s chances of drawing on EU subsidies.

Viktoria Plzeň have travelled to Cyprus for a Europa League qualifying game against local club AEK Larnaca on Thursday night. The Czech league champions fell behind in the home leg of that tie last week but went on to win 3:1.
If Plzeň, who have not won an away game in Europe for over two years, progress to the group stage of the competition for the third time in succession it will bring at least CZK 68 million into the club’s coffers.

The first round of presidential elections is set to take place on January 12 and 13. The head of the Upper House, the Senate, Milan Štěch, announced the date on Wednesday. Among the candidates for the post is the current head of state, Miloš Zeman, lyricist Michal Horáček and Jiří Drahoš, a former head of the Academy of Sciences, who have all already collected 50,000 signatures needed to officially register as candidates. The deadline for the registration for the campaign is November 7.

Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, along with his Slovak and Austrian counterparts, Robert Fico and Christian Kern, are set to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron in Salzburg on Wednesday. On the agenda of their talks will be the future of the EU, social dumping and the EU directive on posting of workers.
Prime minister Sobotka said earlier that he would like to call on French and Austrian firms to substantially raise the salaries of their employees in the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic is the only new EU member state to receive more foreign workers than it posts abroad, suggests an analysis on labour mobility published on the government’s website on Tuesday. The report indicates that in 2014, Czech companies sent 10,400 workers to other states, while the Czech Republic received 17,200 foreign workers.
Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, along with his Slovak and Austrian counterparts, is set to discuss the EU directive on posting of workers with French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting in Salzburg next week.

The demolition of a building on the corner of Wenceslas Square and Opletalova Street in the centre of Prague has been completed. The building, which dates from 1880, was knocked down despite opposition by preservationists, who said it was unacceptable from the perspective of monument preservation. A construction of a new office building in place of the old one is set to start next year.

The number of employers offering part time jobs is increasing, according to a survey carried out by BDO, one of the world’s largest accountancy networks. At the moment, nearly every second large firm in the Czech Republic offers the option of part-time work. The Czech Republic has for a long-time had one of the lowest levels of part-time work in the EU. According to the Czech Statistical Office, there are currently 5.5 percent of Czechs working part-time.

Management of the Šumava National park has issued a ban on public access to parts of the park following heavy storms over the weekend, which felled hundreds of trees. According to the park’s authorities, there is a danger of more trees falling.
The area most affected by the storms is in the southern part of the park in the region of Prachatice, where there are many paths and cycling routes. The clean-up operation is expected to take weeks.

The Czech Republic and Jordan on Tuesday agreed to cooperate in a peaceful development of nuclear energy. The agreement was signed on Monday during a visit of Jordan’s Prime Minister Hani Mulki to Prague. According to Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, it will enable better cooperation in science and research and allow Czech firms to participate on construction of nuclear reactors in Jordan. During their meeting, the Czech and Jordanian prime ministers have also discussed humanitarian aid, trade and problems in the Middle East.
