The Constitutional Court has overturned the verdict of a lower instance court which sent a man to four years in prison for killing his wife and six-year old son in a drink-driving accident.
The Constitutional Court overturned the verdict on the grounds that the fourth family member, the man’s three-year old son, survived the accident and it would be inhumane for the child to lose his father as well.
The case will now go back to the regional court in Ostrava which is likely to consider house arrest as an alternative form of punishment.

Confidence in the Czech economy in August was the highest since the start of the year, according to data released by the Czech Statistics Office.
The August figure was one point higher as compared to the previous month reaching 98.7 points. The confidence rate increased both among entrepreneurs and consumers.
Confidence among entrepreneurs was up by 0.7 points to 96.8 points. Confidence rose in industry, construction and trade and stagnated in services.
Consumer confidence rose by 2.2 points month-on-month to 107.9 points.

Slavia Prague have failed to reach the group stage of the lucrative Champions League after a 0:0 home draw with the Greek club APOEL on Wednesday night. The Czech league champions had lost the first, away leg 0:2 the previous week.
Slavia will now go through to the continent’s second-tier club competition, the Europa League. A draw for its group stage takes place on Friday.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, looks set to come to Prague in the spring of next year. The Czech prime minister, Bohuslav Sobotka, referred to the visit after a meeting with Mr. Macron and the leaders of Austria and Slovakia in Salzburg on Wednesday.
Mr. Sobotka said the French head of state would sign a new four-year plan on cooperation between his country and the Czech Republic in Prague. A current Czech-French strategic partnership agreement runs out at the end of 2018.
The Czech prime minister also said his country and France would commemorate two important anniversaries for his country next year, the centenary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia and 50 years since the Soviet-led invasion of 1968.

The prime ministers of Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia and the president of France said at a joint news conference after a meeting in Salzburg on Wednesday that the EU should find agreement by October on the form of a directive on so-called posted workers. France’s Emmanuel Macron said expert teams would discuss the contentious issue in the coming weeks.
The French and Austrian leaders said the period under which posted workers – who work temporarily in another EU state – can stay abroad and still pay social contributions in their home country should be reduced from two years to one.
However, the Czech Republic and Slovakia want the field of road transport exempted from the EU’s future directive.
Prior to Wednesday’s meeting Czech PM Bohuslav Sobotka said the Visegrad Four states wished to see good conditions for their hauliers.
Stricter conditions on posted workers would impact truck drivers from former Eastern Bloc states who are deployed in Western parts of Europe.

The police are not willing to send members of the lower house’s mandates and immunity committee copies of their file against the ANO MPs Andrej Babiš and Jaroslav Faltýnek, who are accused of the abuse of EU subsidies.
However, committee members will be able to read the file at a Prague police station, its chair, Miroslava Němcová, said on Wednesday.
The ANO deputies are accused of illicitly acquiring around CZK 50 million in EU grants in connection with the Stork’s Nest farm and hotel.
At the time it was owned by Mr. Babiš’s firm Agrofert. However, the party boss denies wrongdoing.

The Czech Republic has handed over to the German authorities a Vietnamese citizen wanted in Germany on espionage charges, the Czech News Agency reported. The man, who is 46, has permanent residence in the Czech Republic.
Earlier this month the German state prosecutor issued an international warrant for the arrest of the man, who is accused of being part of a group that kidnapped two Vietnamese people in Berlin on the orders of Vietnamese agents.

A restored version of the classic Miloš Forman film Black Peter will receive its premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 4. Representatives of the National Film Archive, which has restored Black Peter, said they had consulted Forman and the film’s assistant director Ivan Passer during the process.
During the restoration process a previously unknown extra scene was discovered. However, it has not been added to the movie and will only appear as a DVD extra.

Incumbent Milos Zeman says he fully respects the right of Senate speaker Milan Štěch to set January 12 and 13 as the dates for the first round of presidential elections. Communicating through a spokesperson, Mr. Zeman said he himself had announced dates for October’s general elections with time to spare.
Another candidate for head of state, scientist Jiří Drahoš, said that the dates were important for the public but would not greatly impact his team’s work. A third nominee, lyricist and businessman Michal Horáček, said he had fulfilled all the legal requirements for his campaign. Mr. Drahoš is the bookmakers’ favourite for the vote, which will see a second round on the third weekend of January.
